Paull Holme Strays   75 Black tailed Godwit, 12 Bar tailed Godwit, 2 Little egret, 2 Sanderling, 500 Lapwing, 800 Dunlin and from carpark a woodcock flew past. Near Paull Fort a Brambling fed with Chaffinch and 22 Redwing were present.

Tophill Low : redhead Smew sightings from O res and D res may relate to two birds, Bullfinch and Brambling also on view.
Little Owl sightings from Etton and Lockington and Barn Owl sightings from Withernwick and Lockington

Wednesday 20th
Tophill Low : Kingfisher heard on Barmston Drain, and over South Marsh East, where 5 Redshank were too.  Curlews heard from Baswick Carr.  Willow tit on feedersand numerous Brambling both here and at the wildlife centre.  Treecreeper seen in woodlands.  Siskin was bathing in the centre pond with around 5 Redwing.  Female Smew on O res and the Bittern showed again - this time under the L shaped hide over-looking South Marsh West. 4 Mistle Thrushes, Grey Wagtail, Lesser Black Backed Gull. Barmston : Flock of Barnacle Geese over

Woodmansey: Drake Goosander flew north along the drain and over Plaxton Bridge at 1540 hrs.  A Merlin flew west over Beverley Barmston Drain, about 400 metres south of Plaxton Bridge. Also along the drain between Plaxton Bridge and Dunswell: 1 Barn Owl, 1 Sparrowhawk, 1 Kestrel, 3 Shoveler and 3 Grey Heron.  In Woodmansey a male Yellowhammer and Goldcrest
 
Saturday 16th
Tickton High Eske Area :On flooded fields between Tickton and High Eske: 6 Teal, 60 Lapwing, 8 Redshank, 12 Golden Plover, 3 Shoveler, 20
Wigeon. On River Hull between Tickton and High Eske: 5 Little Grebes
High Eske: 8 Goldeneye, 1 Goosander, 1 Kingfisher, 1 Great-spotted Woodpecker, c. 300 Wigeon, c. 30 Tufted Duck, c. 4 Great Crested
Grebes. Large herd of Mute Swan (c. 70) west of river adjacent Pulfin Bog.


Friday 15th
Tophill : Drake Smew, 750 Black-headed Gull, 1400 Common Gull, 192 Herring Gull, 230 Great Black-backed Gull, 6000 Jackdaw, 1100
Rook, 240 Linnet. Sparrowhawk, Kestrel, Lapwing, Curlew, 2 Great Spotted Woodpeckers.
Bransholme Sewage Works: 15 Pochard, 36 Canada Geese, 6 Shoveler, another vociferous group of Carrion Crows, (most of which were on
the ice) with 169 counted on this ocassion.

Thursday 14th
East Park : Wigeon,Shoveler, Pochard - 18 drakes, 4 females, Goosander 14, Cormorant - one over heading south, Redwing 3,G S
Woodpecker, Coal Tit - one singing male
Tophill Low : Both Smew on 'O' today, Brambling in car park, Willow Tit on feeders, and Bittern was seen on the river bank by regulars at Top
lock - sat stationary for 10 minutes before flying a wide loop into phragmities beds near lagoons.

Of interest a colour ringed Cormorant seen at Tophill in November 2007 has had its origin revealed, It was rung at  Forvie, Newburgh, NE Scotland (South stacks) on  28/6/07 and has spent much of its life in northern Scotland before turning up on the reserve.
 

Wednsday 13th
Tophill Low : Drake Smew on O with the drake Mandarin reported again.  Red-head Smew on D.  Brambling in Car Park and 20 Redwing through.  Treecreeper opposite wildlife centre.  2 Woodcock Southern Site and 2 Barn Owl hunting Watton NR. 

Tuesday 12th
Tophill Low : Brambling in Car Park and Peregrine Falcon over.  Brambling, Grey Wagtail, 2 Redwing. around D Res South hide, and various Goldeneye displaying on D Res.  Willow tit on feeders and Barn owl in the vicinity.  Another Barn Owl was sat in the Watton NR boxes. Bullfinch on North Marsh.  Red-head Smew on 'D' Res last thing, along with a rare sighting of a Shag amongst the cormorants.

Tophill Low: a Slavonian Grebe was on the Reservoirs, along with a pair of Smew and a Woodcock in D woods.

Saturday 9th
Hornsea Mere : Ruddy Shelduck still with Barnacle goose flock, 2-3 Woodcock; all 1st/2nd field. Peregrine over W end.
Swinemoor: 9 Grey Partridge, 2 Woodcock, 1 Water Rail, 1 Grey Wagtail. 3 Curlew, 14 Snipe, 11 Redshank, 4 Lapwing.
Bransholme Sewage Works: 146 Carrrion Crows on the ice, Linnet. Wildfowl crammed onto a sixteenth of the lake - the only part unfrozen: 31 Gadwall, 6 Shoveler, 6 Pochard, 10 Tufted Duck, 104 Coot.

Paull Holme Strays: 2 White-fronted Geese, male Hen Harrier and Marsh Harrier

Thursday 7th
Tophill Low : Drake Smew on D res and 3 Curlew attempted to land - obviously looking for any mud they can find.  Massive numbers of Coots but a decline in other wildfowl species - gone to coast?.  2 Barn owls on North Scrub and Snipe over.  3 Roe deer, Treecreeper and several Goldcrest in D woods.  Grey Heron on Struncheonhill ponds and Kestrel on Barmston Drain.  2 Common Buzzard and a Woodcock over the car park.  Reed bunting in Residential area.  Res's still 2/3rd frozen
Kirkella one heavily laden cotoneaster bush contained 2 Mistle Thrushes, 12 Fieldfares, 5 Blackbirds, one Song Thrush and 8 Redwings.

Wednesday 6th
Tophill:  All marshes and most of 'D' and 'O' Reservoir are frozen.  The remaining areas of open water held several goldeneye.  Carrion crows were feeding on the ice with a grey wagtail hunting for insects.  Female Brambling on the feeders, with Willow Tit and Great Spotted Woodpecker attending regularly.  A male Bullfinch was feeding on nettle stems around the feeders.  Around 600 Lapwing were over Struncheonhill Farm.  1700 Coot, 800 Wigeon 18 Goldeneye, 4 Shoveler etc..
Hornsea Mere : Few hundred Wigeon, Teal etc.. Three hundred large gulls on ice. No white-wingers.

Monday 4th
9 Bullfinch along the disused railway in Little Weighton

Sunday 3rd
Winter Thrushes are entering gardens now with reports of 4 Redwings in Hull and 2 Fieldfares in Walkington gardens
Tophill Low : Female Smew on O Res.  2 Male Goosander flew from O towards D at lunchtime, with a possible third bird present.  Woodcock was flushed in D woods, with male Brambling and Willow Tit on the feeders.  6 Siskin were in the car park.  Bittern was again seen flying along Barmston Drain near Watton NR (A Bittern was also reported in the vicinity prior to Jan 1st too apparently). Welton Waters : 181 Gadwall on site and a report af a Little Stint on the Humber foreshore with Dunlins

7 Shoveller, a Marsh Harrier flew east along strays. A Tawny Owl was being mobbed by Blackbirds in a Paull garden.

Saturday 2nd
Swinemoor : 1 Green Sandpiper, 21 Tree Sparrow, 29 Redshank, 15 Snipe, 2 Grey Wagtail, 40+ Fieldfare, 8 Lapwing
Bransholme Sewage Works  : Only 1/8 of the water unfrozen, many wildfowl gathered in just a small patch of water: 49 Gadwall, 11 Shoveler, 12 Tufted Duck, 4 Pochard, 91 Coot, 15 Mallard, 2 Mute Swan
Tophill Low : Male and Female Smew on O Res.  Grey Heron on Barmston Drain.  Treecreeper D woods and two Pink-feet with the Greylags on D.

Friday 1st
Tophill Low : 69 Species recorded at and around the environs of Tophill today.  Highlights being: 1 male and 2 female Smew on 'O' Res, male Goosander on 'D', Cetti's warbler southern site and a Jay over.  Bittern flew along Barmston Drain next to 'D' res with a Grey Heron near Watton NR.  Grey Wagtail in the car park, Siskin, Linnet, Willow Tit, Brambling, 2+ Barn Owl, Reed bunting and 4 Bullfinch around the site.  5 Roe deer and fox also seen in area.

Brough Haven: 135 Mallard, 1 Shelduck, 1 Teal, one Redshank.

Monday 28th
Hornsea Mere: from or in First Field - One Ruddy Shelduck, c81 Barnacle Geese (one bearing yellow darvick ring with black letters/figures right leg; metal ring left leg). 150+ Greylag, 4 Pink-footed Geese, c15 Meadow Pipit.
High Eske : 350 Greylag flock contained at least one Pink-footed Goose. Grebes included at least three Little.
Arram Carrs: 11 Whooper Swan.
Barmston : 130 Sanderling,60 Oystercatchers,1 Dunlin, 1 Ringed Plover,25 Turnstone.6 Bar Tailed Godwits,8
Grey Plover 2 Redshanks,34 Golden Plover.134 Great Crested Grebe and Male & Female Eider on the sea
Of interest a Ray's Bream(approx 450mm in length) washed up on the tideline apparently good numbers of this Southern Pelagic species have been found along the East Coast thiis month ( Thanks to John Leason for this )

A frozen Tophill low today produced Willow Tit, 3 Bramblings and 2 Siskins at the D res wood feeding station. A female Reed
Bunting was seen on a Driffield bird table

Sunday 13th
Tophill Low : Smew on D Res. D woods feeders provided Brambling, Willow Tit, 18 Siskin, The reserve Mammal Walk went well with 14 people.  Loads of Otter spraints / tracks, Fox scats, Roe Deer tracks, and a Bank Vole caught in the longworth trap which delighted on lookers before being safely released. A dozen Curlew were around WNR/SM East as were a dozen Redshank.

Tophill Low : 2 Woodcock, a few Bullfinch, Great Spotted Woodpecker, a good variety of Fungi were all on show at the north end of the reserve. Water Rail on North Marsh.

Tophill Low : 2 Cettis Warblers were heard in the South Marsh West area today, c30 Siskin in the car park, 1 possibly 2 Willow Tits in the NE corner of the car park, (2nd bird not possitively identified, but worth keeping an eye out). 31 Collared Doves on site
